Request a Roadway or Street Sign in Kirkland - What to Know

The City of Kirkland follows federal guidelines set by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) when installing street signs and pavement markings. Each type of sign request is evaluated based on specific criteria, including crash history, vehicle speeds, traffic volume, and visibility.

Stop Signs and All-Way Stops

Stop signs are often requested to slow traffic, but the City does not install stop signs to reduce speeding.
Per MUTCD guidelines, stop signs are only considered when:

  • Right-of-way needs clarification at an intersection

  • Sight distance is limited

  • A pattern of crashes may be addressed by a stop sign

Each request is reviewed on a case-by-case basis by a Transportation Engineer.

Speed Limit Signs

Speed limits are set based on actual traffic speeds and must be approved by the Transportation Commission and City Council.
Note: All Neighborhood Greenways have a 20 mph speed limit to prioritize people walking and biking.

For concerns about speeding, please refer to the Neighborhood Traffic Calming section.

No Parking Signs

No parking signs may be installed when:

  • Parking needs to be restricted and red curbs are not already in place

  • Parked vehicles are blocking visibility or creating safety concerns

Warning Signs

Warning signs are used to alert drivers to unexpected conditions, like sharp curves or low clearances. These requests are also reviewed case-by-case.
